"In achieving Joint Commission accreditation, Guam Nursing Services has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its patients," says Margherita Labson, R.N., executive director, Home Care Accreditation, The Joint Commission. “Accreditation is a voluntary process and I commend Guam Nursing Services for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community it serves.”

May is Guam Nurses Month!

April 25, 2011, Guam - Governor Eddie Baza Calvo proclaimed May 2011 as Guam Nurses Month. “Nurses play an instrumental part in keeping people healthy and caring for the sick and elderly,” Governor Calvo said.

The Guam Navy Nurses are celebrating being a part of Guam history for the last 100 years. They began teaching at the U.S. Naval Hospital School for Native Nurses on Guam 100 years ago. The Governor proclaimed May 13, 2011 as Navy Nurses Day in honor of the 103rd birthday of the Navy Nurses Corps.

Bernadette Santos, President of Guam Nurses Association and Captain Cynthia Gantt, Director of Nursing Services USNH were in attendance as well as other members of the nursing associations.

Governor Calvo said, “Nurses are a very important part of our community. As the proclamation states, ‘Guam nurses don’t just provide care for Guam’s sick and elderly; they care for our sick and elderly.’ We are working to improve things at Guam Memorial Hospital for these hard working men and women of the nursing field. They are one of the reasons I appointed a new management team at Guam Memorial Hospital. That team is working diligently to continue to improve the working environment for patients, nurses and hospital employees.”

There are many events planned to recognize the important contributions made by nurses. These include a Nurses’ Mass on May 1, a Nursing Conference on May 7, a 5k Fun Run/Walk on May 15, ending with the Nurses’ Banquet and Recognition & Awards on May 29.
